The best DigitalOcean alternatives for teams in Nepal and Australia are Vultr and Akamai (Linode) if you need more cities, OVHcloud if you want more RAM and CPU for the money, AWS Lightsail if you already use AWS, and a managed provider if you would rather not run servers yourself. But DigitalOcean is a capable platform with Sydney, Bangalore and Singapore regions, so only move if something specific is missing. This guide covers why teams look, which alternative fits which need, and a migration checklist.

What DigitalOcean does well#
It is worth being clear about what you would give up:
- Relevant regions: Sydney (SYD1), Bangalore (BLR1) and Singapore (SGP1), each with Droplets, backups, managed PostgreSQL and MySQL, Kubernetes, load balancers, volumes and Spaces object storage (regional availability).
- Simple, pooled transfer: allowances are pooled across all Droplets in a team, overage is US$0.01 per GiB, and there are no regional price differences (bandwidth billing).
- Fine-grained billing: since 1 January 2026, Droplets are billed per second with a 60-second minimum, capped at the plan's monthly price (pricing).
- Good documentation and a large community, which matters when you run servers yourself.
Why teams look for DigitalOcean alternatives#
The reasons usually fall into five groups:
- A missing city. DigitalOcean has one Australian region (Sydney) and one Indian region (Bangalore). If your users are mainly in Melbourne, or you want Mumbai or Delhi for users in Nepal and northern India, other providers offer those cities.
- Price per GB of RAM. A Basic Droplet with 2 vCPU and 4 GiB is US$24 a month, and 4 vCPU with 8 GiB is US$48 (pricing). Some alternatives offer more memory for the same money, with trade-offs covered below.
- Support response times. Free ticket support is available 24/7 with a target response under 24 hours. Faster targets need a paid plan, from US$24 a month (Developer, under 8 hours) to US$999 a month (Premium, under 30 minutes) (support plans).
- Paying from Nepal. Paying any overseas provider means a card enabled for international payments, in US dollars, within your bank's limits. Some teams would rather pay a local invoice in NPR. Our post on buying cloud servers from Nepal covers the options.
- Billing changes. Per-second billing is good news for short-lived workloads. The newer configurable v5 Droplets, though, bill for actual hours without the bundled plans' monthly cap, and list public IPv4 separately (pricing). Changes like these are a good prompt to re-check your bill against the alternatives.
DigitalOcean alternatives by need#
You need Melbourne, Mumbai or Delhi: Vultr or Akamai#
Vultr has Sydney, Melbourne, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Singapore. A 2 vCPU/4 GB Regular plan is US$20 a month with 3 TB of transfer. Budget US$10 a month per instance if you want its DDoS protection add-on.
Akamai (Linode) has Sydney, Melbourne, Mumbai, Chennai and Singapore. Its Linode 4 GB plan (2 CPU, 80 GB, 4 TB transfer) is US$24 a month at the same price across those regions. Akamai also offers free 24-hour support by ticket, phone or email, which some small teams value highly.
You want more RAM for the money: OVHcloud VPS#
OVHcloud's VPS-1 (2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe) starts from US$4.54 a month, and VPS-2 (4 vCores, 8 GB, 75 GB NVMe) from US$8.50. On the Australian site the same plans are listed from A$6.29 and A$11.90 excluding GST (OVHcloud Australia). Daily backup and anti-DDoS are included.
The trade-off is traffic. In Sydney, Singapore and Mumbai the "unlimited" traffic has a monthly quota (500 GB for VPS-1, 1 TB for VPS-2 and VPS-3, 3 TB for VPS-4), after which bandwidth drops to 10 Mbps. VPS is also priced monthly rather than per second.
Your team already uses AWS: Lightsail#
Lightsail bundles look like Droplets: US$24 a month for 2 vCPU, 4 GB and 80 GB, with managed databases, containers and object storage as add-ons. It is available in Sydney, Mumbai and Singapore. Note that plans in Sydney and Mumbai include half the listed transfer allowance, and inbound traffic counts towards it.
Your users are in Europe: Hetzner#
Hetzner is very competitive in Europe, but its only Asia-Pacific location is Singapore. There, a 2 vCPU/4 GB CPX22 is US$30.99 a month excluding VAT and IPv4, with 1 TB of included traffic. It suits European workloads better than Australian or Nepali ones.
You would rather not run servers at all: a managed provider#
If the real problem is time, not DigitalOcean, a managed provider may be the better change. No provider in this table has a region in Nepal. Test latency from Kathmandu to the India and Singapore regions, and from Sydney or Melbourne for Australian users. Our guide to choosing a server location explains what else to weigh up.
How to test latency from Kathmandu and Sydney#
Create a small server in each shortlisted region for an hour or two (hourly billing keeps this cheap). Then run these from a machine in each city where you have users:

curl -o /dev/null -s -w 'connect=%{time_connect}s ttfb=%{time_starttransfer}s\n' https://<test-hostname>/Repeat the tests in the evening as well as during the day, because routes and congestion change. Compare the median and the worst results, not the best one.
Compare the whole bill, not the plan price#
Backups, DDoS protection and IP addresses are priced differently at each provider, so compare a realistic set-up. Here is a dated example: two servers of about 2 vCPU and 4 GB each, with the provider's automated backups switched on. The figures use list prices as at September 2026, before tax.

Backup rates come from each provider's pages: DigitalOcean's 20% weekly or 30% daily, Vultr's 20% add-on, Akamai's per-plan price, Lightsail's snapshot rate, OVHcloud and Hetzner's 20% plus a €0.50 monthly IPv4 charge per server (Hetzner Docs).
Treat this as a method, not a verdict. Disk sizes differ, OVHcloud's Asia-Pacific traffic quota and Hetzner's 1 TB Singapore allowance may matter more than the price, and your own time on the servers does not appear in any of these totals.
When staying on DigitalOcean is the right call#
Moving has a cost, and sometimes the honest advice is to stay. DigitalOcean is probably still right for you if:
- you rely on several of its managed services (Kubernetes, managed databases, Spaces) and would need to replace them all at once;
- your team knows its tools and API well, and your bill is within budget;
- your latency tests from your users' cities are already good enough;
- your main gap is response time, which a paid support plan or a managed provider can fix without a migration.
Migration checklist: moving off DigitalOcean safely#
Migrations tend to fail at the edges: a forgotten cron job, a bucket nobody listed, a DNS record with a 24-hour TTL. Work through this list in order:
- Inventory everything: Droplets, volumes, snapshots, Spaces buckets, managed databases, load balancers, firewalls, reserved IPs, DNS records, SSH keys, cron jobs, environment variables and third-party webhooks.
- List everything tied to your current IP addresses: payment gateways, SMS providers, partner APIs and database firewalls that allowlist your server's IP. Also check email sending, which may need new SPF records. Ask each third party how long an IP change takes, because some need days.
- Map each item to its target: for example Spaces to S3-compatible object storage, and managed PostgreSQL to a managed or self-run database on the new provider.
- Lower DNS TTLs to around 300 seconds at least 48 hours before cutover.
- Build the target environment, ideally as code, so it is repeatable. See our Terraform starter.
- Copy data and rehearse. Do a full trial run and time it, then test the application on the new environment.
- Test a restore on the new platform before you depend on its backups.
- Cut over in a quiet window: pause writes, run a final sync, switch DNS, and watch error rates and logs.
- Keep a rollback window. Leave the old environment running, read-only, until you are confident.
- Decommission properly. Delete Droplets, volumes, snapshots and buckets you no longer need, so billing actually stops.
For a PostgreSQL database and a Spaces bucket, the data copy often looks like this:

rclone sync do-spaces:my-bucket target-s3:my-bucket --checksum --progressFor large or busy databases, a dump and restore may need too much downtime. Replication-based migration is safer there, and worth planning with someone who has done it before. Whichever method you use, compare row counts for your key tables, and object counts in each bucket, between source and target before you switch DNS.

What is the best DigitalOcean alternative for Australia?
It depends on what you are missing. If you need Melbourne as well as Sydney, Vultr and Akamai both offer it. If you want more RAM and CPU for the money and your traffic is moderate, OVHcloud VPS in Sydney is worth pricing. If your team already uses AWS, Lightsail keeps you inside that account. Test latency from your users' cities before deciding.
Is there a DigitalOcean alternative with servers in Nepal?
Not among the major international providers compared here, as at September 2026. Teams serving Nepal usually test regions in India, such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi NCR or Chennai, and Singapore. If a contract or regulator requires data to stay inside Nepal, you will need a local data-centre provider instead, and should confirm its status yourself.
How long does it take to migrate away from DigitalOcean?
Copying servers and data is usually the quick part. Most of the time goes on taking an inventory, rebuilding the environment, testing, lowering DNS TTLs in advance and keeping a rollback window. A single-server app with one database is far simpler than one using Kubernetes, Spaces and managed databases together. Plan the cutover for your quietest period.
Can I keep DigitalOcean and still get managed support?
Yes. If DigitalOcean suits you but you want someone to patch, monitor and back up your servers, a managed provider can work inside your existing account.
