OVHcloud vs DigitalOcean vs Vultr vs Akamai (Linode) vs Hetzner vs AWS Lightsail: an honest VPS comparison (2026)

Looking for the best VPS provider for Australia or South Asia? Six providers compared on price, regions, traffic rules, backups and SLAs.

There is no single best VPS provider in 2026: the right choice depends on where your users are, how much traffic you serve and how much of the server you want to run yourself. For Australian and South Asian audiences, OVHcloud, DigitalOcean, Vultr, Akamai (Linode) and AWS Lightsail all have servers in Sydney and in India or Singapore, while Hetzner's only Asia-Pacific location is Singapore. Below, we compare the six on plans, regions, traffic rules, backups, SLAs and ecosystem, using each provider's own pages as at September 2026.

If the terms are new to you, start with our guide to cloud servers, VPS, dedicated servers and managed hosting. All prices below are list prices before tax, change often, and link to the page we checked on 18 September 2026. We have not benchmarked these providers for this article. The last section shows you how to test them yourself.

Which is the best VPS provider for you? The short answer#

  • Plenty of RAM and CPU for a low monthly price, moderate traffic: OVHcloud VPS. Daily backup and anti-DDoS are included, but in Sydney, Singapore and Mumbai the "unlimited" traffic comes with a monthly quota.
  • A simple self-serve platform with managed extras in Sydney, Bangalore and Singapore: DigitalOcean.
  • The most city choices in Australia and India: Vultr (Sydney, Melbourne, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Singapore).
  • Free 24-hour human support, including by phone: Akamai (Linode).
  • Very low prices when your users are in Europe: Hetzner. It is a weaker fit if you need hosting in Australia or India.
  • Already on AWS, or planning to grow into it: Amazon Lightsail.

Plans compared at two common sizes#

A "vCPU" is not the same unit everywhere. It can be a shared thread on older hardware or a share of a newer, faster core, so use these tables as a first filter only. Prices are monthly, in US dollars, as at September 2026.

Notes on the tables:

  • OVHcloud shows "from" prices. Its Australian site lists VPS-1 from A$6.29 and VPS-2 from A$11.90 a month, excluding GST (OVHcloud Australia). The configurator shows the final price for your location and term. VPS-3 (6 vCores, 12 GB) and VPS-4 (8 vCores, 24 GB) sit above these.
  • Hetzner prices exclude VAT and a public IPv4 address, which costs €0.50 a month (Hetzner Docs). The CX line is not offered in Singapore. The prices above apply to new orders from 15 June 2026.
  • Cheapest entry points: DigitalOcean from US$4 (512 MiB), Vultr from US$5 in its Asia-Pacific locations (1 GB), Akamai's Nanode from US$5 (1 GB), Lightsail from US$5 (512 MB, or US$3.50 IPv6-only), and Hetzner Singapore from US$17.99 (CPX12, 1 vCPU and 2 GB).

None of the six has a region in Nepal. For users in Nepal, test the India and Singapore regions from Kathmandu. For Australian users, Sydney or Melbourne will usually be the starting point. Our guide to choosing a server location for latency and data residency covers how to decide, and our DigitalOcean alternatives for teams in Nepal and Australia looks at the same market from a Nepal and Australia angle.

Traffic rules and billing quirks#

Outbound traffic causes more surprise bills than anything else, and the rules differ most in Asia-Pacific.

  • OVHcloud: traffic is advertised as unlimited, with public bandwidth of 500 Mbps to 3 Gbps depending on plan. In Mumbai, Singapore and Sydney there is a monthly quota: 500 GB for VPS-1, 1 TB for VPS-2 and VPS-3, and 3 TB for VPS-4. After that, bandwidth is capped at 10 Mbps rather than billed (OVHcloud). Prices are quoted per month.
  • DigitalOcean: transfer is pooled across all Droplets in a team, overage is US$0.01 per GiB, inbound is free, and DigitalOcean says there are no regional variations (bandwidth billing). Since 1 January 2026, Droplets are billed per second with a 60-second minimum, and bundled plans are capped at their monthly price (pricing).
  • Vultr: each account gets 2 TB of free bandwidth a month plus each running instance's allowance, accrued hourly. Overage is US$0.01 per GB (bandwidth caps, overage rate). The API shows the same prices in Vultr's Asia-Pacific locations as in its base locations.
  • Akamai: transfer goes into an account-wide pool, with separate pools for some newer regions such as Jakarta and São Paulo (network transfer). Compute overage is US$0.005 per GB in its Asia-Pacific pricing. Its G8 Dedicated CPU plans include no transfer and bill by usage.
  • Hetzner: EU servers include 20 TB. US servers include 1–5 TB and Singapore servers 0.5–5 TB, depending on plan. Billing is hourly, capped at the monthly price (Regular Performance), and overage is billed in 100 MB blocks (billing FAQ). Prices rose on 1 April 2026 for new and existing products (Hetzner statement) and again for new orders on 15 June 2026.
  • Lightsail: inbound and outbound traffic both count towards the allowance, but only outbound traffic beyond it is charged. Plans in Sydney and Mumbai get half the listed allowance, while Singapore gets the full amount (Lightsail pricing).

Provider backups usually sit in the same provider, and often the same region, as the server. That protects you against a broken server, but not against losing the account or a region.

Disk-level snapshots can also catch a database mid-write, which is why Akamai's own Backups documentation recommends scheduled database dumps as well. Keep one copy elsewhere and test restores. Our 3-2-1 backup and restore-testing guide explains how.

Hetzner's cloud line-up gives you building blocks: load balancers, free stateful firewalls, private networks and volumes. Databases and Kubernetes you run yourself.

Best suited for: a fair summary of each provider#

OVHcloud#

Strong on resources for the price, with NVMe storage, daily backup and anti-DDoS included. It also has a full Public Cloud (managed Kubernetes, managed databases, object storage) in Sydney, Singapore and Mumbai. It suits steady business workloads with moderate traffic. Check the Asia-Pacific quota if you serve large files or video.

DigitalOcean#

Clear pricing, good documentation, per-second billing and pooled transfer. It also offers managed databases, Kubernetes and Spaces in all three regions that matter here. It suits product teams that want a self-serve platform and are happy to pay more per GB of RAM for that convenience.

Vultr#

The widest spread of Australian and Indian cities in this group, and many plan types, from basic shared-vCPU plans to high-frequency and dedicated-vCPU plans. It suits latency-sensitive apps that need a particular city. Budget US$10 a month per instance if you want DDoS protection.

Akamai (Linode)#

Simple plans, a pooled transfer allowance with low overage pricing, a 99.99% compute SLA and free 24-hour support by phone and ticket. It suits teams that want a human on the line without buying a support plan.

Hetzner#

Very low prices and 20 TB of traffic in Europe. In Singapore, prices are higher and allowances smaller, and there is no Australian or Indian location. It suits European workloads, development and test environments, and batch jobs where latency to Australia or South Asia does not matter.

AWS Lightsail#

Fixed monthly bundles inside AWS, with managed databases, containers, object storage and load balancers. You can move to the wider AWS platform later. It suits teams already using AWS. Remember the halved allowance in Sydney and Mumbai.

How to run your own VPS benchmark#

Published benchmarks go out of date quickly, and your application is the only workload that matters. We suggest this method:

  1. Shortlist two or three providers with a region near your users.
  2. Create the same size of server on each. Hourly billing keeps the cost of a test low. OVHcloud VPS is sold monthly, so plan for one month there.
  3. Run each test at least three times, at different times of day, over two or three days.
  4. Test from where your users are. For example, measure latency from Kathmandu and Sydney, not just from the server.
  5. Deploy your real application and load-test it with a tool such as k6, using realistic traffic.
  6. Record the date, region, plan and exact commands so you can repeat the test later.
bash
# Install the tools (Ubuntu/Debian)
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y sysbench fio iperf3 mtr-tiny

# CPU: events per second across all cores for 60 seconds
sysbench cpu --threads="$(nproc)" --time=60 run

# Disk: 4K random read/write, bypassing the page cache
fio --name=randrw --filename=/var/tmp/fio.test --size=2G --rw=randrw --rwmixread=70 \
    --bs=4k --ioengine=libaio --iodepth=32 --numjobs=4 --direct=1 \
    --runtime=60 --time_based --group_reporting
rm /var/tmp/fio.test

# CPU steal from busy neighbours: watch the "st" column
vmstat 1 60

# Throughput to a second server you control (run "iperf3 -s" there first)
iperf3 -c <other-server-ip> -t 30 -P 4

# Latency and packet loss, run from your users' location
mtr --report --report-cycles 100 <server-ip>

Compare results for the same plan size across providers, not headline numbers from different tiers. High or erratic steal time on a shared plan usually means you should try a dedicated-vCPU plan or another provider.

Where a managed layer fits#

Every provider above sells servers you run yourself: you patch, monitor, back up and respond at 2 am. If your team is comfortable doing that, buying direct is the cheapest option. Our comparison of managed vs unmanaged VPS sets out what you take on.

Inventure provides the managed layer on OVHcloud infrastructure in Sydney, Singapore, Mumbai, Frankfurt, London and Canada. That covers setup, hardening, monitoring, backups, human support and billing in NPR, AUD or USD.

We can also manage your own OVHcloud, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or DigitalOcean account. We do not offer instant self-serve provisioning: our engineers set up each server for you. If you need a server in the next five minutes, go direct.

What to do next#

If you have shortlisted a provider but would rather not run the server yourself, see our managed cloud servers or current plans and prices. If you are still weighing up the big platforms, read our OVHcloud vs AWS vs DigitalOcean comparison for SMEs.

Frequently asked questions

Which VPS providers have servers in Australia?

As at September 2026, OVHcloud (Sydney), DigitalOcean (Sydney), Vultr (Sydney and Melbourne), Akamai (Sydney and Melbourne) and AWS Lightsail (Sydney) all offer VPS hosting in Australia. Hetzner does not: its only Asia-Pacific location is Singapore. Check each provider's current region list before you order, because new locations are added regularly.

Is there a VPS provider with a data centre in Nepal?

None of the six providers compared here has a Nepal region as at September 2026. Teams serving users in Nepal usually test regions in India (Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi NCR or Chennai, depending on the provider) and Singapore. Measure latency from Kathmandu and your other user locations to each candidate region, because routing can matter as much as distance.

What does unlimited traffic mean on an OVHcloud VPS in Sydney?

OVHcloud advertises unlimited traffic on its VPS range, but its page notes that in Mumbai, Singapore and Sydney each plan has a monthly quota: 500 GB for VPS-1, 1 TB for VPS-2 and VPS-3, and 3 TB for VPS-4. Beyond the quota you are not billed extra, but bandwidth is capped at 10 Mbps until the next month.

Can I compare VPS providers by price per vCPU?

Only roughly. A vCPU can be a shared hyperthread on one provider and a newer, faster core on another, and some plans burst while others are dedicated. Price per vCPU or per GB of RAM is a useful first filter, but run the same CPU, disk and network tests on each shortlisted plan before deciding.
